  21. US DOMESTIC versions of the USRobotics Courier V34 (V.Everything) are
  22. now compliant with US Domestic (Bellcore Spec) Caller-ID, thanks to
  23. the latest 01/23/96 firmware upgrade.  It works quite well.

  25. However, earlier models of the Courier V34 which incorporate a
  26. daughterboard (models which were upgraded via daughterboard
  27. changeouts) will need to have a hardware modification applied to the
  28. mainboard before Caller-ID will work.  That's what the article
  29. discussed.....how to do it.

  31. USRobotics is offering to perform the hardware mod. for US $24.95 +
  32. shipping, a procedure which preserves the owner's warranty and retains
  33. the telco certification status.  Units modified by persons OTHER THAN
  34. the USR factory repair center will have their warranty voided. Also
  35. the mod is technically a violation of FCC rules if -not- performed at
  36. the factory.  However, the modification is not a terribly difficult
  37. task for anyone with soldering experience on miniature electronic
  38. components and use of CMOS-safe ESD component handling procedures.
  39. If that soldering experience is in using a propane torch to repair the
  40. plumbing or in using a Weller D-550 and a roll of 8-guage solder to
  41. fix the car wiring, then I recommend sending the modem in.

  43. Be aware that USR recently extended Courier warranties to 5 years, so 
  44. a daughterboard-style V34 Courier which you may have thought was out
  45. of warranty by now, may in fact not be.
